achieve for your dancing ( like exams, performance, full-time auditions, professional aspirations) and you are running out of time to improve enough to get there (lockdowns also not helpful for consistency!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSooooo frustrating\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So then you\u00a0 go looking for different\u00a0 programs and approaches to try and solve each problem separately and they told you to do this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a)Stretch at the end of your range to improve flexibility<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b)Do individual repetition bases exercises to strengthen\u00a0 each muscle group you are \u2018weak\u2019 in<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c)Create \u2018dance conditioning\u2019 by engaging \u2018the correct\u2019 muscles and then when that fails to improve the ability to hold a developp\u00e9 or arabesque or utilise turnout in class just do a) and b) again<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d) Roll out stiffness and soreness on a roller or massage ball (\u2018ow!\u2019) and when that doesn\u2019t\u00a0 work go\u00a0 and pay someone to really make it hurt and be just as sore again a couple of days later!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cDancer Groundhog Day\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they told you:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving flexibility meant you had to feel a\u00a0 stretch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthening to improve dance ability meant conditioning exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To access core muscles you had to consciously and strongly engage to feel them working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling intense pain when massaging out tight muscles was a sign you were relieving the tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restriction and discomfort in your body was a byproduct of training at intensity and you are a dancer so what did you expect?!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Turns out none of that was true<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what is the real problem here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real problem is you are constantly asking your body to try and make the shapes that define your dancing style (ballet, lyric, hip-hop, contemporary, Irish, tap you get the picture!) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have felt and understood your own bodies&#8217; unique signals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means you are constantly trying to fit a square peg (your styles required shapes) into a round hole (your body)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you don\u2019t have\u00a0 a body that<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the facility to make the required shape (for instance in ballet think ridiculous arches, hyper-extended knees, lean long lines bendy back, natural leg flexibility)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you are do whatever you can to make it fit into the required shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that is not healthy for your body or for your chances of really progressing to where you want to go or for you as a person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See, to master the physical shapes that define your style of dance\u00a0 at the same time as you are trying to remember and perform sequences of steps at different speeds, intensities, dynamics and complexities in perfect time to the music (aka dancing!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is an almost impossible task&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it any wonder that it seems like there is just waaay to much to try and get right and waaaay too little time to do it in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olution:\u00a0 bypass the outer muscle \u2018movement gatekeepers\u2019 and go straight to the source,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the muscles that attach to bone), without conscious engagement- whilst having the shapes themselves completely supported and \u2018safe.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because no true lasting improvement is possible without the body trusting that it will not be hurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat sounds great but how can I possibly do that????\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re absolutely right, so here it might be good to provide a little background to how this all came about&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 15 or so years ago I was teaching dance and pilates and martial arts in different spaces and places, instructing students to consciously engage the right muscles to create the right shapes and I realised that all that concentration required to engage meant they couldn\u2019t\u00a0 move with freedom (or at all!),\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then when I emphasised relaxing their form fell apart,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore I started becoming obsessed with finding the \u2018sweet spot\u2019 of how to both achieve the deep strength and control and yet also move with complete freedom and fluidity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just like everyone else I thought that improving flexibility, strength, stamina, skill levels each required a separate class&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what I didn\u2019t realise then was that the longer the gap between a \u2018specialist\u2019 conditioning or flexibility exercise and its utilisation in the actual high level movement genre you were training in, whether ballet, gymnastic, martial arts, calisthenics or any sport, the less likely that it would ever improve skill level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, because your movement skill or art requires\u00a0 a far higher order of neuro-muscular complexity than the exercises you are most probably using, you need to be testing them against technique immediately you do them to see what if any changes (positive, neutral or negative) have occured.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise you fall straight back in to the \u2018conditioning trap\u2019 of doing all the \u2018right things\u2019 with no way of gauging if they are actually working or not in the only area that counts-dance class and performance safe facility and skill improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: repetitive conditioning exercises or feeling them stretching in flexibility work so important?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do strength and conditioning exercises it doesn\u2019t matter how strongly you feel muscles\u00a0 \u2018working\u2019 the minute you try and use them in dancing you are blocking your freedom to move because freedom and engagement are diametrically opposed and use muscle groups for completely different purposes.\u00a0 The irony is this means you are actively training \u2018hard\u2019 to stop yourself from achieving your goal of making your dancing effortless..<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stretch to the point of feeling a stretch, unless you are already naturally flexible you are actually activating your bodies \u2018cease and desist\u2019 response which arises to protect your body from a perceived threat, in this case contracting muscles strongly to avoid damage to joints, ligaments and tendons. And because you have just spent 30 minutes or so in a static battle with your organisms innate self preservation instinct you are also completely unable to utilise\u00a0 towards the dynamic freedom and power within elevated ranges of movement that so much of your dancing requires.
